Vice Admiral Gurcharan Singh takes over as Commandant of National Defence Academy

On 25 May 2024, Vice Admiral Gurcharan Singh assumed charge as the Commandant of the National Defence Academy.

About Vice Admiral Gurcharan Singh

  • Gurcharan Singh is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (Khadakwasla) and was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 1 July 1990.
  • He has held a number of appointments both at sea and ashore.
  • He served as a Gunnery and Missile Specialist, and has served on Indian Naval Ships Ranjit and Prahar.
  • He has served as Gunnery Officer of INS Brahmaputra (three indigenously built warships), Executive Officer of INS Shivalik, and Commanding Officer of INS Kochi as well as INS Vidyut and INS Khukri.
  • He has been an instructor at INS Dronacharya (Gunnery School) and Deputy Commandant of the Naval War College, Goa.
  • On 29 November 2022, he took over as Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet.
  • On promotion to the rank of Vice Admiral on 15 January 2024, the Flag Officer was appointed as Controller Personnel Services, in charge of various initiatives to improve the working conditions of the personnel and naval community

Honors given to Vice Admiral Gurcharan Singh

  • Gurcharan Singh was awarded the ‘Admiral Katari Trophy’ for securing ‘First Position in Overall Merit Order during Initial Training’ in the batch.
  • In December 2011 INS Khukri was awarded the Chief of Naval Staff ‘Unit Citation’ for overall operational effectiveness and successful conduct of anti-piracy operations.
  • It has also been awarded the FOC-in-C Commendation in the year 2002, Nausena Medal in the year 2020 and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in the year 2024.

Educational Qualifications of Vice Admiral Gurcharan Singh

  • He holds MSc and MPhil in Defence and Strategic Studies.
  • He has attended Staff Course at DSSC Wellington, Higher Command at Naval War College and NDC courses in India.
  • He has also attended Maritime Intelligence Course at National Intelligence University (NIU), Washington and United Nations Staff Officers Course (UNSOC) at Stockholm, Sweden.

About National Defence Academy (NDA)

  • NDA is the premier training centre for officers of the armed forces of India.
  • It is located in Khadagvasla, Pune. It was established in 1954 and aims to provide joint training to officers of the three services.
  • Cadet of Indian Army, Navy and Air Force are jointly trained in NDA.
