Purpose: Why Women’s Equality Day 2022 celebrated?
This day celebrated with the aim of promoting women empowerment. Apart from this, awareness has to be spread on many issues like discrimination against women, rape, acid attacks, feticide. While on one hand women are making their name bright in every field in today’s time, on the other hand they have to go through many types of social discrimination and incidents. At such a time, this day talks about equality of women within the society.
History: When did the celebration of Women’s Equality Day begin?
Celebrating this day started to reduce and completely eliminate the inequalities against women all over the world. New Zealand was the first country in the world to introduce women’s equality, which made a move in this direction in 1893.
In the United States of America, on August 26, 1920, women got the right to vote for the first time through the 19th Constitutional Amendment. 26 August declared as Women’s Equality Day to commemorate the 19th Constitutional Amendment. Amendment XIX prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States. Before this amendment, women there had the status of second class citizens. Women got equal rights through the efforts of female lawyer Bella Abzug.
What is the status of women in India?
Since ancient times, women have been given the status of ‘Goddess’ in India. This is clearly stated in the Vedas as well. The respect given to a woman in India is not seen anywhere in the world. However, in the last few years, the spread of western culture has created a different situation in the country.
