World Soil Day 2022: History, Significance and Theme

World Soil Day is celebrating every year on 5th December all over the world. The purpose of celebrating this day is to spread information about the importance of soil. Rapid soil erosion is a serious environmental issue that is currently facing by countries all over the world.
The ‘Save Soil Movement’ started 45 years ago in India to create awareness about soil. The objective of this mission is to bring soil conservation and its sustainable management to the attention of the people. This movement increases the awareness about soil erosion for the people of the country. Soil erosion produces a deterioration in the condition of the soil over time.
Significance and theme of this day
This day raises awareness and interest in soil conservation among people around the world. Soil has special importance for all living beings and plants. Soil erosion causes loss of organic matter and reduces soil fertility. This day plays an important role in dealing with all such challenges. Every year with a special theme, it connects people on the occasion of this day. The theme of this year’s World Soil Day is ‘Soils: Where food begins’. Through this, by solving the increasing challenges in soil management, fighting soil salinity, increasing soil awareness is being encouraged.
World Soil Day’s History
The celebration of World Soil Day started from December, 2013 to make the soil aware globally. The United Nations General Assembly had announced to celebrate this day every year on 5 December during the 68th General Assembly meeting. A resolution also passed for this. In the year 2002, for the first time, the International Union of Soil Science recommended celebrating this day on 5 December. Then later unanimously in 2013 this day was declared to be celebrated officially.
