The Gandhi Peace Prize 2021 will be give to Gita Press for its contribution to the collective upliftment of humanity. The jury, headed by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has described the important and unique contribution of Gita Press as a symbol of Gandhian way of life in true sense. The jury appreciated the contribution of a hundred year old institution (Gita Press) in promoting Gandhian ideals of peace and social harmony.

What is the Gandhi Peace Prize?

It is an annual award give by the Government of India. The Gandhi Peace Prize instituted in the year 1995 as a tribute to the ideals of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, on the occasion of his 125th birth anniversary. The award is give to all persons without distinction of nationality, race, language, caste, creed or sex. The Gandhi Peace Prize carries an amount of one crore rupees, a citation, a plaque and an outstanding traditional handicraft/handloom masterpiece.

Names of past winners

Past winners of the Gandhi Peace Prize include organizations such as ISRO, Ramakrishna Mission, Grameen Bank of Bangladesh, Vivekananda Kendra (Kanyakumari), Akshaya Patra (Bengaluru), Ekal Abhiyan Trust (India) and Sulabh International (New Delhi).

Late Dr. Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa, Dr. Julius Nyerere, former President of Tanzania, Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne, Dr. Gerhard Fischer, Baba Amte of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. John Hume of Ireland, Mr. Vaclav Havel, former President of Czechoslovakia, Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa, Mr. Chandi Prasad Bhatt and Mr. Yohei Sasakawa among the distinguished recipients of the award Are included.

Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said of Oman in 2019 and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman of Bangladesh in 2020 awarded the Gandhi Peace Prize.
