Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas is celebrated every year on 9 January, which highlights the contribution of Indians in the development of the country. On the occasion of this day, people who bring glory to India through their work in foreign countries are honored and rewarded. In the year 1915, on 9 January, Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi returned home from South Africa, hence this day is celebrated on 9 January. The then Prime Minister of the country Atal Bihari Vajpayee had announced on 8 January 2002 to celebrate Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas on a large scale on 9 January every year.

Question 2. Scientists of which country have recently created ‘e-soil’?

Answer – Sweden

Swedish scientists have recently created ‘e-soil’ to accelerate the growth of plants. This electrically conductive ‘soil’ has been discovered by researchers at Linköping University which promotes crop growth. This soil gives excellent results especially in barley seedlings. Due to this, the quantity of barley crop is likely to increase by 50% in 15 days. This soil has been prepared for hydroponic farming. In this type of farming the plants are completely dependent on water, nutrients and a supporting substrate.

Question 3. In which city of India was the first meeting of the Inland Waterways Development Council held?

Answer – Kolkata

The first edition of Inland Waterways Development Council (IWDC) was held in Kolkata. It concluded with several initiatives in an effort to increase the capacity and feasibility of India’s inland waterways. The meeting was presided over by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways and AYUSH Sarbananda Sonowal. It was attended by key stakeholders including ministerial representatives of states as well as policy makers and industry personalities. In this meeting, a commitment was made to invest Rs 45,000 crore for the development of river cruise tourism in the country.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has launched the Yogashree Scheme for SC/ST students of the state. Under this scheme, free training modules will be provided for Scheduled Caste (SC) and ST students. Under this scheme, 50 training centers will be established in the state.
