NIMHANS, Bengaluru awarded the Nelson Mandela Award 2024 by WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has awarded the Nelson Mandela Award 2024 to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru.

• On this occasion, Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya has congratulated NIMHANS, Bengaluru on receiving the Nelson Mandela Award for 2024. Union Minister Mandaviya said that “India’s efforts in inclusive healthcare are recognized.” Union Health Secretary Apoorva Chandra said that with this award, India’s efforts and pioneering work in the field of mental health have been recognized. Hence, congratulations to NIMHANS for this achievement. Dr. Pratima Murthy, Director, NIMHANS, Bengaluru said that “This award is not only a recognition of our past and current achievements, but also a recognition of the lasting legacy and vision that has guided NIMHANS since its inception. It strengthens our resolve to continue our mission to promote mental health and well-being – making a tangible difference in the lives of the people we serve.”

• The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) Bengaluru is an autonomous apex centre for mental health and neuroscience education in the country under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
• NIMHANS was established in 1974.
• This medical institute is governed by an Act of Parliament called the NIMHANS Act, 2012.
• The Central Government recognised its excellent academic status, growth and contribution and declared it a ‘Deemed University’ in 1994.
• NIMHANS, Bengaluru has been given the status of ‘Institute of National Importance’ in 2012.
