Command Hospital successfully implanted Piezoelectric Bone Conduction Hearing Implant
Command Hospital, Pune (Southern Command) recently conducted a successful piezoelectric bone conduction hearing implant. It has become the first government hospital in the country to do so.
About Piezoelectric Bone Conduction Hearing Implant of Command Hospital
Command Hospital, Pune achieved this feat by implanting two piezoelectric bone conduction hearing implants in a 7-year-old child suffering from hearing loss caused by severe congenital anomalies of the outer and middle ear and an adult suffering from deafness in one ear. The Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) department of the hospital has procured and successfully implanted Piezoelectric Bone Conduction Hearing Implant, making Command Hospital the first government hospital in India to do so. The ENT department of this hospital is a designated Neurotology center of AFMS. This department of Command Hospital has been providing implantable hearing solutions to patients for many years.
Active Piezoelectric Bone Conduction Hearing Implant System is an implanted medical electronic device for hard of hearing patients. This device provides relief from conductive hearing loss (including aural atresia), mixed hearing loss and deafness in one ear.
Cochlear implantation could not be performed in many patients with conductive/mixed hearing loss or deafness in one ear. It was not possible to get him benefit from hearing aids or even middle ear surgery. In such circumstances, bone conduction implantation is the definitive hearing solution for patients.
About the Transplant Team of Command Hospital
This Piezoelectric Bone Conduction Hearing Implant was carried out at the Command Hospital under the guidance of Senior Consultant and Head of Department (ENT) Colonel (Dr) Neetu Singh. Neurotologist and implant surgeon Lieutenant Colonel (Dr) Rahul Kurkure successfully performed the implants in the patients.
The Command Hospital (SC), Pune, one of the premier institutions of AFMS, is currently commanded by Major General B Nambiar. Recently this hospital has been awarded the prestigious “Raksha Mantri” trophy as the best hospital in the entire AFMS.
