Special Olympics Berlin 2023: India’s medal tally
The Special Olympics World Summer Games is a global celebration of unity, inclusion and the extraordinary achievements of athletes with intellectual disabilities. The 2023 Special Olympic World Summer Games are being held in Berlin, Germany.
Running from 17 to 25 June 2023, the Special Olympics 2023 is being contest in 26 sports. Over 7,000 Special Olympics athletes from 190 countries are participating in these Games.
India’s medal table at the Special Olympics Berlin 2023
India’s total medal tally in the competition so far has gone up to 96. These include 33 gold medals. India won nine medals in roller skating, including three gold, five silver and one bronze. Three gold and one silver medal also found in power lifting. One gold, one silver and one bronze medal won in Judo. One gold, one silver and one bronze medal were also received in table tennis.
Most of the events had to be canceled or postponed due to rain yesterday and 1 is yet to be held. Therefore, there is every expectation of an increase in the number of medals.

Indian contingent for Special Olympics World Summer Games 2023
The Indian contingent for the 2023 Special Olympics Summer Games consists of 280 members, including 198 athletes. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has sanctioned a sum of Rs 7.7 crore for the participation of the Indian contingent in the Special Olympics. This is the highest amount in terms of funds sanction for this event so far.
The Indian contingent also participated in a preparatory training camp at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi to prepare for the world event. Indian athletes are competing for medals in 16 different sporting events in this global sporting event.
About the Special Olympics
The Special Olympics World Summer Games held in 1968 at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Over a thousand athletes from 26 US states and Canada competed in track and field events. The Special Olympics initiated by Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s vision to promote equality and inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
The Special Olympics Games held every four years and have seen a steady increase in participation. Over the years, the Special Olympics World Summer Games held in Dublin (2003), Shanghai (2007), Los Angeles (2015), and Abu Dhabi (2019).
The 2023 Special Olympics World Summer Games are officially called the XVI Special Olympics World Games (Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023). It is the 16th edition of the Special Olympics World Summer Games. With this, Germany is organizing the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2023 for the first time.
