State-of-the-art Submersible Platform SPACE inaugurated in Kerala

Recently, the Secretary of the Department of Defense (R&D) and Chairman of DRDO, Dr. Sameer V Kamat inaugurated the state-of-the-art Submersible Platform ‘SPACE’ at Kulamavu, Idukki (Kerala) for the Indian Navy.

Submersible Platform for Acoustic Characterization and Evaluation

This state-of-the-art Submersible Platform SPACE is for acoustic characterization and evaluation in the Underwater Acoustics Research Facility. The space, established by the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), has been designed as a major test and evaluation centre for deployed sonar systems on various platforms including ships, submarines and helicopters for the Indian Navy.

‘Submersible Platform for Acoustic Characterization and Evaluation’ developed by DRDO is a significant achievement in naval technological advancement. The space comprises two separate assemblies – a platform that floats on the surface of the water and a submersible platform that can be lowered to any depth up to 100 meters using a winch system. Once operational, the submersible platform can be winched up and docked with the floating platform.

Space Usage

The state-of-the-art Submersible Platform ‘SPACE’ will be used by the Indian Navy to evaluate the entire sonar system. This will provide rapid deployment and easy recovery of scientific packages such as sensors and transducers. It will be suitable for survey, sampling and data collection of air, surface, mid-water and reservoir bottom parameters using modern scientific instruments. It will cater to the needs of data processing and sample analysis in modern and well-equipped scientific laboratories. SPACE marks the beginning of a new era of anti-submarine warfare research capabilities.
