Foreign deployment of ship ‘Samudra Pehredar’ in ASEAN countries

Highlights of Samudra Pehredar overseas deployment

  • This visit of special pollution control ships is part of a broader initiative.
  • The ICG ship is on overseas deployment to ASEAN countries – Philippines, Vietnam and Brunei from 25 March to 12 April.
  • This is the third consecutive deployment of the Indian Coast Guard to ASEAN countries. Earlier in the year 2023, ICG pollution control ships had visited Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia as part of this initiative.
  • During the deployment the ship will conduct port inspections at Manila (Philippines), Ho Chi Minh (Vietnam) and Muara (Brunei).
  • The ship is equipped with specialized marine pollution control equipment and deployment of a Chetak helicopter for pollution response configuration, designed to contain, contain and enhance operations against oil spills at sea.
  • Pollution response training and practical demonstration of various equipment will be conducted at the ports.
  • The ship will also participate in the government initiative “Puneet Sagar Abhiyan”. For this, 25 National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets have also been inducted to provide an international reach with partner countries.
  • As part of the foreign exchange programme, NCC cadets, ICG ship’s personnel, personnel of partner agencies, in coordination with the Indian Embassy, Mission staff and local youth organizations, undertake cleaning of beaches and similar activities during the ship’s port visit. Will be involved in other activities.
  • The Indian Coast Guard has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the coast guards of the Philippines and Vietnam to enhance maritime cooperation and maritime safety and security. This relationship has been strengthened over the last few years to ensure safety, security and marine environment. Have developed.

Objective

  • The ICG aims to demonstrate marine pollution response capabilities.
  • The aim is to strengthen bilateral cooperation with the Philippines Coast Guard (PCG) as well as share concerns and resolve regarding marine pollution in the ASEAN region.

  • ICG Samudra Pehredar is deployed off the east coast of India in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
  • Over the years, Samudra Pehredar has successfully participated in various coast guard operations including marine pollution response, IMBL/EEZ surveillance, prevention of transnational crimes and Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR).
