Meteorology and Oceanography (METOC) Seminar ‘Meghyan-24’
As part of World Meteorological Day celebrations, METOC (Meteorology and Oceanography) seminar ‘Meghyan-24’ was organized at Southern Naval Command. The School of Naval Oceanography and Meteorology (SNOM) and the Indian Naval Meteorological Analysis Center (INMC) organized the seminar on 28 March 2024.
Main points of Meghyan-24 seminar
- Theme for Meghyan Seminar year 2024 – ‘At the Frontline of Climate Action’.
- Presentations were made in the seminar by Dr. TVS Uday Bhaskar, Scientist, Indian Naval Center for Ocean Information Systems (INCOIS), Hyderabad and Dr. Raghavendra Ashrit, Scientist ‘G’, National Center for Medium Range Forecasting (NCMRWFN), New Delhi.
- Explained about the latest technologies adopted by scientists and computation of climate data to help policy makers in taking decisions at the national level.
- The seminar discussed the latest technologies adopted by the Indian Navy and Indian scientific organizations in providing METOC inputs/forecasts and various topics on ‘Impact of weather and climate change on naval operations’.
- The seminar served as a platform to share knowledge and information on weather and climate services as well as to address the challenges of climate change.
- The event was attended by Rear Admiral Upal Kundu, Chief of Staff, Southern Naval Command, Commodore (NOM) of Naval Headquarters, Commander Abhinav Barve and Shri Miren Karamta, Director, BISAG.
Note: INDRA (Indian Naval Dynamic Resource for Weather Analysis), an indigenous mobile application to disseminate weather information and forecasts was also launched on the occasion. The application has been developed by BISAG (Bhaskaracharya National Institute of Space Applications and Geo-informatics) in coordination with the Directorate of Naval Oceanography and Meteorology of the Indian Navy.
World Meteorological Day
- Celebrated every year on 23 March.
- On March 23, 1950, the World Meteorological Organization was established as a department of the United Nations.
- Objective: To make people aware about meteorology and the continuous changes taking place in it.
- The theme of ‘World Meteorological Day’ in the year 2024 is “At the frontline of climate action”.
