Ayushman Bharat Day is celebrated every year on 30 April. The purpose of this day is to spread awareness among the people about access to health services and to educate people about the Ayushman Bharat scheme.

On this day, special publicity campaigns are run in which the benefits of Ayushman Bharat scheme are highlighted.

History of Ayushman Bharat Day

  • Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) was launched on 23 September 2018. To commemorate the launch of this important scheme, the Government of India decided to celebrate the first ‘Ayushman Bharat Day’ on 30 April 2019.
  • Various awareness campaigns and activities were organized on the occasion.

Importance of Ayushman Bharat Day

  • Raising awareness about the benefits of PM-JAY: The day will educate people about the various aspects and benefits of this important health insurance scheme. This will increase the number of people taking advantage of the scheme.
  • Highlighting the importance of health care: On this day, people will be made aware of the importance of health care through various programs across the country. With this people will pay more attention to their health.
  • Promotion of primary health care facilities: The day will focus on primary health care centers and guidelines. This will increase access to health facilities in rural and remote areas.
  • Promoting digital health initiatives: Ayushman Bharat Diwas will highlight initiatives like digital health and telemedicine that make healthcare accessible.
  • Encouraging a healthy lifestyle: On this day, aspects like nutrition, exercise and mental health will be discussed, which promote a healthy lifestyle.

About Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY)

  • Start: 23 September 2018
  • Goal: To provide quality health services free of cost to the people with low-income and marginalized people of the country.
  • Coverage: This scheme provides insurance coverage up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year.
  • Beneficiaries: About 50 crore poor and vulnerable people of the country are beneficiaries of this scheme.
  • Services: This plan covers treatment of many critical illnesses like cancer, heart disease, dialysis etc.
  • Hospitals: Around 23,000 government and private hospitals across the country are associated with this scheme.
  • Portability: The health insurance available under this scheme can be availed by any member of the family from any hospital across the country.
  • Electronic health facilities: Digital services like e-cards, mobile apps and call centers are also covered under the scheme.

Atal Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Karyakram (PM-JNHPM)

  • PM-JNHPM is an important component of the scheme.
  • The main objective of this program is to strengthen primary health care services in rural and urban areas.
  • Under this, Health and Wellness Centers (HWC) are being established. The target is to install 1.5 lakh HWCs across the country.
  • HWC basic health services, maternal and child health services, family planning services, vaccination, digital services etc.
