Bharat New Car Assessment Program: Bharat NCAP
The much-awaited Bharat New Car Assessment Program (Bharat NCAP) was launched today by the Union Minister for Road and Transport Highways, Nitin Gadkari. The Government’s program is a significant step in the Government’s commitment to improve road safety by raising the safety standards for motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes (M1 category) in India.
The Bharat New Car Assessment Program aims to provide car customers with a tool to make a comparative assessment of the crash safety of motor vehicles available in the market. Under this program, car manufacturers can voluntarily offer their cars tested in accordance with the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197. The car will then be awarded a star rating based on its performance in the tests conducted under this program. With this, customers will be able to buy a safer car for themselves considering the adult occupant and child occupant ratings.
Changes from the Bharat New Car Assessment Program
- Earlier cars sold in India were given the Global NCAP crash test rating but now the crash test rating will be given under the India New Car Assessment Program.
- Bharat NCAP will increase the demand for safe cars in the country, which will encourage car manufacturers to meet the needs of the customers.
- Indian cars with higher safety standards will be able to compete better in the global market.
- This will increase the export capacity of car manufacturers in India.
The Automotive Research Association of India is working as the testing agency for the Bharat New Car Assessment Program. Over 800 pre-NCAP crash tests have been conducted at ARAI’s state-of-the-art labs at Pune and Chakan. This agency is fully prepared to conduct international level tests. The special thing about Bharat NCAP will be that it will not get separate ratings for adult and child safety like other crash-test agencies.
