The first phase of voting for the Indian general election 2024 is being held on 19 April. The election process for the 18th Lok Sabha will be conducted in a total of 7 phases.

  • The Indian general election, being held in 2024, is the largest in scale compared to other countries in the world.
  • This election is for the 18th Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies in four states.
  • Its first phase is being organized on 19 April 2024.
  • Over the last two years, the Election Commission and its teams in States and Union Territories have worked hard to provide the best experience to every voter participating in the General Elections 2024.
  • For this, the Commission has completed several consultations, reviews, field visits, extensive training of officials and operational processes in line with the times.
  • 7 phases of elections will be held from April 19 to June 1, in which approximately 97 crore voters will cast their votes.
  • All votes will be counted on June 4. 

First phase of Indian general election 2024

  • Voting for the first phase of the Indian general election 2024 is taking place on April 19, 2024.
  • Voting in Phase-I will be held in 102 parliamentary constituencies in 21 states/UTs and 92 state assembly constituencies in Arunachal and Sikkim.
  • Voting time has been kept from 7 am to 6 pm, this time may vary slightly according to the parliamentary constituency.
  • In the first phase, more than 16.63 crore voters will vote at 1.87 lakh polling stations. Where more than 18 lakh polling officers will be on duty.
  • There are a total of 1625 candidates in the first phase (Male-1491; Female-134).
  • 41 helicopters, 84 special trains and around 1 lakh vehicles have been arranged for polling and security personnel.

Phase-I voter’s Details

  • The total voters in Phase-I include 8.4 crore male, 8.23 crore female and 11,371 third gender voters.
  • In this, 35.67 lakh voters registered to vote for the first time.
  • There are 3.51 crore youth voters in the age group of 20-29 years.

Convenience for voters

  • The Commission has provided the option of voting from home to more than 14.14 lakh registered voters above 85 years of age and 13.89 lakh disabled voters.
  • The Optional Home Voting facility provided by the Commission in 102 Parliamentary Constituencies is receiving tremendous appreciation and response.
  • However, for older voters, the option of voting from the center and from home has been provided to them. Therefore, they have also been provided with all the facilities like pick and drop facility, signage, Braille signage on EVMs, and volunteers.
  • Disabled voters can also book wheelchair facilities for themselves through the Commission’s ‘Saksham App’.
  • All minimum facilities like water, shed, toilet, ramp, volunteers, wheelchair and electricity are available to all voters.
  • More than 5000 polling stations including security staff will be managed entirely by women and more than 1000 polling stations will be managed by persons with disabilities (PWD).
  • The Commission has also provided 12 alternative documents in addition to the Voter’s Identity Card (EPIC) for verification of identity of voters at polling stations.
