Recently, India’s first domestic gene therapy for cancer treatment has been launched at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay by President Smt. Draupadi Murmu.

About India’s first domestic gene therapy (CAR-T cell therapy)

  • India’s first CAR-T cell therapy has been developed in coordination with the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and Tata Memorial Hospital in collaboration with industry partner ImmunoACT.
  • The name of this series of cancer treatments is “CAR-T cell therapy”, which is cancer immunotherapy treatment.
  • This is the world’s accessible and affordable CAR-T cell therapy.
  • CAR-T cell therapy is considered one of the unprecedented advancements in medical science.

CAR-T (Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell) cell therapy

  • It is a new and emerging cancer treatment system.
  • This is a cell-based therapy in which the patient’s own T cells (a type of white blood cells) are modified.
  • Mechanism of action: In this therapy, the patient’s T cells are modified in the laboratory so that they can recognize and destroy cancer cells.
  • Uses: It is primarily used in the treatment of blood cancers such as lymphoma and leukemia.
