‘New Delhi’ the world’s most polluted capital for 4 years
New Delhi achieved the worst score in the air quality 2023 category in the report released by Swiss organization IQAir. With this, New Delhi has become the most polluted capital of the world for the fourth consecutive year.
Air quality of polluted capital New Delhi
- In the air quality list, Delhi has received the status of the world’s most polluted capital for 4 consecutive years since 2018.
- According to the report 2023 of Swiss organization IQ Air, the PM 2.5 level of air in Delhi is 92.7 micrograms per cubic meter.
- According to the IQAir report, the PM 2.5 level of air in Delhi in 2022 was 89.1 microgram per cubic meter.

‘India’ the third worst air quality country
In terms of air quality, India ranks third among 134 countries after Bangladesh and Pakistan with an average annual PM2.5 level of 54.4 micrograms per cubic metre. This report shows that in 2023, about 100 crore people in India will experience PM2.5 air levels. Last year, this level of air in the country was higher than the annual level of five micrograms per cubic meter of air set by the World Health Organization. Whereas the average annual PM2.5 concentration of Bangladesh was 79.9 micrograms per cubic meter and that of Pakistan was 73.7 micrograms per cubic meter. India was the eighth most polluted country in the 2022 report with PM2.5 concentration at 53.3 micrograms per cubic metre.
Situation in other states of India
According to the IQAir 2023 report, Begusarai in Bihar is the most polluted urban area in the world. Begusarai’s air quality PM2.5 concentration stood at 118.9 micrograms per cubic metre. Begusarai, which was out of the ranking in last year’s report, has become the most polluted urban area globally this year. If we look at other cities of India, the PM concentration in more than 66 percent of the cities is more than the annual average of 35 micrograms per cubic meter.
