International Yoga Day 2024: 75 days countdown begins

Yoga Mahotsav 2024 is organized to commemorate the 75-day countdown of International Yoga Day. 5,000 yoga practitioners participated.

‘International Yoga Day’ dedicated to yoga is celebrated every year on 21 June. It inspires people around the world to take up yoga and make them aware of the effects it can have. Moving in this direction, Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga and National Institute of Naturopathy under the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India jointly organized ‘Yoga Mahotsav’. The festival was organized at Wadia College Sports Ground, Pune. In which a large number of people (about more than 5,000 yoga practitioners) participated. Yoga Mahotsav 2024 is organized to commemorate the 75-day countdown of International Yoga Day.

About International Yoga Day

The idea of celebrating this day was presented by PM Narendra Modi in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 27 September 2014 during his first term. This proposal of Modi got huge support from the member countries. Then UNGA adopted this proposal on 11 December 2014 and declared 21 June as International Yoga Day.

June 21 was chosen for this day because it marks the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. This day is the longest day of the year, which has its own special significance in many parts of the world.

Importance

This day holds immense cultural, spiritual and health significance globally. The main objective of celebrating it is to improve physical fitness, mental well-being, emotional balance and spiritual development. Yoga promotes the importance of harmony between our mind, body and spirit, as well as the interconnectedness of all other beings and the environment.

Theme

International Yoga Day, organized every year under a special theme, was celebrated last year under the theme “Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”. The theme for 2024 is not known yet. It will be updated soon when information is received.

Activities on this day

On International Yoga Day, yoga related activities are organized in every corner of the country and abroad. Which promotes the principles of unity, compassion and understanding. On this day, yoga is practiced in schools, grounds and offices etc. for individuals and communities to come together and celebrate the universal values of yoga. To promote International Yoga Day, drawing and poster related competitions are organized by institutions, especially schools, at many places.
