Rajaswa Bhawan: History, location and architecture

Rajaswa Bhawan is the headquarters of the Revenue Department of the Government of India. It is situated on Rajpath, Delhi. It is a very prestigious and important building, which is related to all the major revenue collection and administration of the country.

History of Rajaswa Bhawan

• The construction of Rajaswa Bhawan was completed in the year 1939.
• The original objective of this building was to provide a dedicated headquarters for important revenue departments like the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and the Central Board of Indirect Taxes (CBEC).
• After independence, this building became an important center for important departments of the Ministry of Finance of the Government of India.

Location and Architecture

• Rajaswa Bhawan is located on Sadar Rajpath in New Delhi and is known for its magnificent architecture.
• The building was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, who also created the master plan of New Delhi.
• The architecture of the building is based on the colonial Baroque style and uses pink marble.
• Its length is approximately 670 feet and width is 370 feet.

Internal structure

• The interior of the Rajaswa Bhawan is very spacious and well maintained.
• It consists of several auditoriums, meeting rooms, offices and separate sections for different departments.
• Near the main entrance there is a large auditorium known as Sadar Auditorium.
• The building’s decoration also includes sculptures, frescoes and other artistic details.

Sadar Auditorium

• Sadar Hall of Revenue Building is its most attractive part.
• It is a huge and grand auditorium in which many important meetings and functions of the Revenue Department are held.
• The ceiling of this auditorium is a magnificent example of architecture with intricate carvings and decorations. The huge chandeliers on the ceiling look astonishing.
• Ancient artefacts and sculptures are also housed in this auditorium, some of which are replicas of Greek gods.
• Two huge pillars built at both ends of the auditorium further enhance its beauty.

Other Departments

• The Rajaswa Bhawan houses the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Department of Excise and Taxation, Board of Direct Taxes Audit and many other departments.
• All these departments maintain important functions related to revenue management and tax policy of the country.
