The Ministry of Mines organized a one-day workshop in Delhi on May 8, 2024 in partnership with Indian Institute of Technology-Indian School of Mines (IIT-ISM), Dhanbad.

Main points of the workshop

  • Its objective is to discuss the draft framework of the State Mining Index envisaged to capture the performance of the mining sector of the States.
  • This workshop will help in finalizing the framework based on the responses received from the states.
  • The Ministry of Mines has given the responsibility of designing this framework, collecting data and conducting a study to prepare the index to Dhanbad-based IIT-ISM.

Role of mining sector in India

  • States play an important role in the development of India’s mining sector.
  • The mining sector contributes about 2.6% to India’s gross domestic product (GDP) and about 14% to industrial output.
  • All minerals are owned by the rich states as per mining laws. There are mining regulators at both the central and state levels.
  • Big companies like Coal India, NMDC, Hindalco, Sterlite Industries operate in the mining sector.
  • Various approaches have been set out for the mining sector. These include prioritizing resource use efficiency along with equity, sustainability and responsibility, the need to focus exploration on Indian soil, taking action to facilitate future mineral production and the interests of individuals and areas affected by mining-related operations and Involves working for profit.
  • Thus, a State Mining Index has been envisaged to capture the performance of the mining sector as well as future preparedness on the part of the States in mining activity. The scope of this index will include non-fuel major minerals and minor minerals.

Indian Institute of Technology-Indian School of Mines (IIT-ISM), Dhanbad

  • IIT-ISM, is a prestigious institute providing higher education in the field of Mining and Environmental Engineering.
  • This institute was established on 9 July 1926 under the name of Bharatiya Khan Vidyapeeth. Later in 2016, it was granted the status of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).
  • Its main objective is to provide high quality education and research in areas related to mining, engineering and technology.
