A two-day workshop on “Bridging the Standardization Gap” was organized by the National Institute of Telecommunications Policy Research, Innovation and Training (NTIPRIT) in Ghaziabad from 15 to 16 May 2024.
Highlights of the two-day workshop on bridging the standardization gap
- The workshop was organized by National Institute of Telecommunications Policy Research, Innovation and Training (NTIPRIT), Ghaziabad under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in collaboration with International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Field Office and Innovation Centre, New Delhi.
- The objective of the workshop is to develop telecommunication standards writing skills.
- The workshop underlined the importance of collaborative standard-setting processes and highlighted the steps taken by India to contribute to global ICT standardization efforts.
- The workshop was attended by officials from Department of Telecommunications, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), telecom service providers including Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), telecom engineering centers and regional units of start-ups.
- The workshop was part of the preparatory activities for the World Telecommunications Standardization Assembly (WTSA) to be hosted by India from October 15 to 24, 2024.
- This sets the stage for increased participation of Indian experts in WTSA-2024, demonstrating India’s commitment to being a leader in global telecom policy.
National Institute of Telecommunications Policy Research, Innovation and Training (NTIPRIT)
- NTIPRIT was established in the year 2011.
- It is an autonomous institute under the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India.
- Its main objective is to promote policy research, innovation and training in the telecommunication sector.
- NTIPRIT is governed by a Governing Council consisting of representatives from the Department of Telecommunications, other ministries and industry.
- The main funding of this institute is done by the Department of Telecommunications.

World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly ( WTSA)
- It is the supreme body that sets international standards in the telecommunication sector.
- It is organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a specialized agency of the United Nations.
- Its main objective is to set international standards for telecommunication.
- All 193 ITU member states participate in the WTSA. Representatives from the telecommunications industry and academic institutions also attend.
- Adherence to these international standards is important to ensure interoperability, quality and continuity in the telecommunications sector
